K'gari - Fraser Island
Escape
K'gari has over 40 camping areas to choose from and must be booked through Queensland Parks and Forests. Depending on how you plan to spend your time on the island and who you are spending it with will determine where you stay.
There are 7 discrete remote camping areas on the western side of the Island. The powdery white sand, crystal clear blue water with yachts scattered around in the distance gives it an exotic postcard feel. You have a good chance of spotting dugongs, dolphins and other sealife. It is generally much quieter on the western side due to strict limitation of campers, lack of amenities and its remoteness.
If you want to wake up to a beautiful sunrise every day, head to Ocean Lake or one of the 8 other camping zones on the eastern beach. The eastern side of the island offers much quicker access to the majority of the well known points of interest. The camping zones are spread nearly the length of the island on the east coast so you have plenty to choose from depending on whether you want to be close to shops, amenities or a certain attraction.
There are fenced sites to prevent dingoes entering the campgrounds which are perfect for young families, these are located at Central Station, Lake Boomanjin, Dundubara and Waddy Point.
For those that don’t fancy the camping scene there are plenty of accommodation options. The Kingfisher Bay Resort is a great choice on the western side at Kingfisher Bay and on the eastern beach K’gari Beach Resort at Eurong. There are houses and apartments scattered around the island that are also available for rent. Be sure to book well in advance as this style of accommodation can be tricky to find.
Explore
For those who struggle to sit still this is the perfect place for you, K’gari offers so many beautiful places to explore.
Eli Creek lies on the eastern beach. Each hour around 4 million litres of clear, freshwater flows from Eli Creek into the ocean. With a boardwalk that follows the creek inland, this is the perfect spot for a swim or float.
Champagne Pools are naturally formed rock pools and are one of the island’s most popular attractions. At low tide you’ll find calm pools and at high tide waves crash over nearby rocks filling these pools with frothy bubbles, just like a glass of champagne! The pools are located on the eastern side of the island between Waddy Point and Indian Head.
Maheno Shipwreck The SS Maheno washed ashore just north of Happy Valley on 75 Mile Beach during a cyclone in 1935. Once a well-known trans-Tasman liner, today the hull now lies about 10km north of Happy Valley.
Lake McKenzie is famous for its white silica sand and crystal clear freshwater. Lake Mckenzie is a crowd favourite and for a good reason. The blues and greens of this perched lake also known as Boorangoora are endless. You’ll want to spend all day lounging around at this hotspot.
Central Station was originally established as a forestry camp when there was logging on Fraser Island (K’gari). Central Station offers a picnic area and an educational display surrounding the early development of the island and its abundant flora and fauna. There is also a beautiful boardwalk that winds through lush rainforest around Wanggoolba Creek, giving you a chance to see some of the world’s largest ferns.
Adventure
K’gari is an adventurers haven, the island offers an extremely diverse selection of activities, from simple things like bushwalking through the tropical forests on boardwalks, swimming in picturesque freshwater lakes and creeks, fishing, camping, and four wheel driving along the beautiful beaches and scenic inland tracks, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
Don’t forget
Driving on K'gari is dependent on conditions, so take tides and ease of access into account when planning trips and while navigating around the island. Make sure that you have all the basic recovery gear and are familiar with its use.
Dingoes are best left alone. Do not attempt to approach, touch or feed them, they are a wild animal and can be unpredictable so always be on guard.
